Palestine & South Africa — Apartheid, Truth, Reconciliation

sschulmanWhile I didn’t plan this at all, I must remark on the importance – the happenstance – of reading Sarah Schulman’s newest book, Israel/Palestine and the Queer International (and its information on the boycotts, divestment and sanctions movement) while visiting South Africa.

I finished the book last night and this morning over breakfast had the great pleasure of meeting Dr. Alex Boraine, one of the main architects of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In 1995, he was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to be its deputy chair serving under Chairman Archbishop Desmond Tutu from 1996 to 1998.  He went on to found the International Center for Transitional Justice among other pursuits.  He has recently joined the board of the Global Arts Corps where I serve as Executive Director.

My journey of learning about the boycotts, divestment and sanctions movement began at the 2012 Creative Time Summit.  That important thing that can happen, is happening, and I can’t stop knowing what I now know…
